Giza occupies the western side of Greater Cairo, across the River Nile, but its name is most closely associated with the pyramids, approximately 8.5 km from the river. The Giza Plateau is Egypt’s best-known archaeological destination, where the atmosphere can feel as overwhelming as the monuments themselves. Around the site, horse-drawn carriages, camels and tour coaches share the busy approaches, while persistent vendors offer everything from scarves to miniature pyramid souvenirs.
Against a landscape dominated by monuments built around 4,500 years ago, the area has experienced a major transformation. The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, changes to the management of horse and camel services, modern cafés and improved toilet facilities are reshaping the visitor experience. Upscale restaurants now serve Egyptian cuisine with extraordinary views of the pyramids.
Visitors with very limited time could base themselves in Giza and skip central Cairo, although this would mean missing much of the capital’s character. For most travellers, a day trip to Giza offers a more practical way to explore the plateau while leaving time to discover Cairo itself.
Where to Eat in Giza ?
Exploring the pyramids can build quite an appetite. If your schedule allows a longer stop, Khufu’s… offers a memorable dining experience, pairing pyramid views with contemporary interpretations of Egyptian dishes.
For a more relaxed meal, 139 Pavilion at Marriott Mena House.. serves an international menu around the clock. Large windows frame views of the pyramids, making the setting as much a part of the experience as the food.
Andrea El Mariouteya … is known for spit-roasted chicken and flavourful mezze. Its garden provides an inviting place to dine while looking out across the surrounding city.
For an elegant evening, reserve a table at Barranco at Hyatt Regency Cairo West . Although it does not offer the same dramatic pyramid backdrop, its Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine provides a distinctive dining experience. Opening hours are 6 PM–1 AM.
